It’s a pretty straightforward headline, but attempts to immediately connect browsing job sites with the real ultimate goal my readers have in mind… getting more freelance work.

The active voice tends to be easier to understand when scanning through multiple different headlines and trying to decide which article is best for you.
And as long as you’re not running a news organization, the active voice will be a more natural headline structure to help capture the attention of your readers.

- Active voice headline example: “Jury Finds Defendant John Smith Guilty for His Heinous Crimes”
Which of these headlines would you click on? To me, the active version is much more appealing, because it’s rooted in a current action that sounds like it’s happening right now.

When should your readers click through to come and read your post?
Of course, the answer is now. That’s why you should write a headline that contains words that inspire a sense of urgency. Examples include words like now, today, instantly and a whole host of others.
Take for example the blog headline I wrote for my guide about how to get a remote job—which frames the entire article around getting a remote job this weekend. Adding that timeframe to the headline makes my guide feel more attainable and arguably easier for readers to commit to.
Strive to answer the when question within your blog headline, by showing readers a time frame in which they can achieve the results promised by the blog post. If you’re writing a blog post in the weight loss niche, a good headline could be: “How to Lose Your Belly Fat in 21 Days (Without Sacrificing Your Favorite Food).”

According to studies, the best performing blog headlines have an average of about 6-12 words in them. That’s usually between 50-80 characters.

Another simple reason to avoid writing a headline that leans on clickbait, is that Google explicitly frowns upon clickbait. As such, your content won’t rank as well as it otherwise should.
25. Don’t Write Vague Headlines
Vagueness is another quality problem that plagues many headlines.
As much as you may want to surprise your readers with a profound revelation in your blog post, that is by no means a justifiable reason to write a headline that’s overly vague (in hopes that readers will click through to try and find the answer to your vague headline).
Your blog headlines must clearly portray the content of your article, if you hope to build lasting relationships with your readers.
26. Never Use the Third Person Point of View in Headlines
Most blog posts are not news articles. Because blog content is meant to connect you with your readers, it’s important that you avoid the use of the third person point of view (i.e. he, she, they).
Instead, use the first (I, me) and second person (you, your) point of view as much as possible in both your headlines and throughout your blog posts.
Why? Well, the third person narrative often distances readers from your message, as it makes them feel like outsiders looking in. First and second person perspectives however, make your readers feel like a friend—and that they’re involved in the process that’s happening right now on the page.
Just as there are best practices for writing blog headlines, these few mistakes must be avoided if you hope to learn how to write a headline that’ll bring you more readers.

I’d go with a new headline like: 12 Sample Product Manager Resumes (Free Template and Examples) in 2020
The word “template” is probably a pretty important search intent word for a topic like this. I bet some searchers will use “examples” in their queries. Date always helps establish relevance/makes it feel more current for readers. With a new headline along the lines of what I’ve rewritten here, you’d have “sample” and “examples” in your title, along with “free template” which are likely all pretty useful from the perspective of both Google better determining what your article covers—and searchers also feeling more compelled to click on your result over another 🙂

Hi Pradip, I agree with Ryan. Your headline example is ok, but it didn’t offer the reader the benefits of what he’ll get by reading the post. Ryan used numbers and other elements that reveals the benefits, such as templates and samples. It makes your blog post headline more compelling to the reader.
That’s because the benefits are made clear to your ideal reader in the headline— something your audience will get out of reading the content.

I have an article about podcasting equipment with title “Best Podcast Equipment (For Beginners & Pros)”
That’s a pretty solid headline already, but the one change I’d consider making is to lead with a number. For content types like this, most people are searching for a list of the “best” equipment they should consider buying in order to start their podcast—or take it to the next level… so giving them a quick number that starts the headline off with an expectation of just how much equipment we’re talking about can really set the right expectations. 5-15 equipment recommendations is probably reasonable for this topic without leaving a searcher feeling overwhelmed (i.e. seeing 50 tools would feel super overwhelming to me and I’d choose something that sounds more simple/easier to wrap my head around). You can also always have more tools recommended in the article as “bonus” or “upgrades” to make one day… but having a core number that’s not too intimidating might be a good starting point.
I’d go with a new blog headline like: “10 Best Podcast Equipment and Tools in 2020 (for Beginners & Pros)”
Adding the term “tools” into the title should also help you pick up some extra relevant long-tail keywords for this article, and adding in the date to show that the piece is current should be meaningful too!
Both of these sentences are in the passive voice:
Passive voice headline example: “Defendant Found Guilty by Jury”
Active voice headline example: “Defendant John Smith is Found Guilty by the Jury for His Heinous Crimes”
The active voice headline example would be:
Jury finds defendant John Smith guilty for his Heinous Crimes

This is a really fun one, Michael. From a quick search, it looks like both “business idioms” and “legal idioms” are terms people are searching for in this niche. With that in mind, I’d suggest having two separate articles with headlines like:
50 Business Idioms You Need to Know (in English) for 2020
25 Legal Idioms to Understand (in English Law) for 2020
Leading with a number for content like this will almost always help your content get more clicks from search engines. The reason I’d break these subjects down into two articles, is because the people searching for one of these idiom lists—aren’t necessarily guaranteed to be interested in the other (and there appears to be enough idioms in both categories to really justify a comprehensive list for each). Plus, Google also likely realizes that these are two distinct subjects we’re dealing with—and will want to serve different search results, so that they’re giving searchers the best possible result that’s most specific to their query.

That’s a pretty abstract headline… so as a reader, I’m not sure if you’re talking about diversity in the workplace, diversity in a community, diversity in schools, diversity amongst friends, etc. There’s too much ambiguity in this headline for a reader to really understand what the article is about, so you can assume search engines like Google will also not quite know what to make of your content. Here’s one possible idea:

The one tweak I’d make is to add a bit more to the headline, so that you’re not leaving valuable headline space on the table here. Something like this here would quantify how “easy” the process is, with a clear number of steps… and adding a year to the title will also make it more relevant than the older articles floating around out there:

However, adding a bit more color to it, could definitely help prospective readers develop a better understanding of your story… and decide whether or not it’s for them. Maybe something like:
