#57: John Lee Dumas on Growing Entrepreneur on Fire to $200,000/mo in Revenue

About the Episode:

Quick note from Ryan—I’ve been talking a lot more lately about my experience growing my podcast to more than 500,000 downloads within the first 2 years, so if you’re interested in starting a podcast of your own, then check out my guide to the best podcast hosting platforms on the market today.

In today’s episode, we’re talking to John Lee Dumas, the powerhouse behind the massive podcast and blog Entrepreneur on Fire where he’s interviewed nearly 2,000 of the world’s most interesting and successful entrepreneurs. That includes people like Tony Robbins, Seth Godin, Gary Vaynerchuk, Barbara Corcoran, Tim Ferriss and more.

John started his podcast back in 2012, after a long, winding journey of ups and downs in various careers as an Army Officer, law school student, and some hard time in the worlds of finance and real estate.

After searching for a more meaningful way to make a living, John turned to one of his own intense personal interests—listening to podcasts. After years of following along with entrepreneurs who hosted their own shows, he was wondering why there wasn’t a 7-day-a-week show for aspiring entrepreneurs.

That lightbulb moment led to John slowly learning more about the world of podcasting, and today, his show boasts millions of monthly downloads.

Since launching in 2012, John’s business has generated over $13 Million dollars in revenue from a combination of podcast sponsorships, affiliate income, sales of online courses, access to exclusive communities, digital products, physical products, and more.

In Today’s Episode, We Talk About:

[02:52] How he got some big name guests to agree to an interview before launching the show.
[03:46] One thing he did that was very helpful in the early stages.

[08:21] How he priced his mentorship program in the early days.
[09:19] His most effective strategy for acquiring new listeners.
[10:42] How he grows his audience today.
[12:25] Tactics he’s tried in the past that have failed.
[14:47] The best investment he’s made in growing his business.
